Providence ES (FLL)

We started and mentored team 23794 Providence Panthers Lego League Team at Providence Elementary School. We meet with them every Tuesday in order to help them prepare for their competition on May 13th. Their club consists of two teams with six students each ranging from second through fourth grade.

01/04/23 |
After just a few minutes of introducing the program, Ms. Whitis and Ms. Heather agreed to be the teacher sponsors. We explained the program to the principal and were able to get the program running with over 100 students interested. Although we were only able to have two teams of 6 students each, we plan to start more teams in the future. |
For our next meeting, we plan to have the kits ready and to start the sessions with the new students. |

At our first meeting with the students, we were able to explain the program and start our lessons on Energy. Since we wanted the first meeting to be more of an introductory meeting, we brought our old Freight Frenzy robot to show them the FTC Program and how it works. |
For our next meeting, we plan to teach the different types of Energy and show the Energy diagram in order to get them thinking before we build the models. |
01/17/23 |
At our second session with the students, we completed the slides for our Day 2 session which covered the diagram of how Energy is received, stored, and delivered. Using this information, the students were able to name different examples for each component of how Energy is transferred. |
For our next session, we plan to have the students start building the models provided in the SPIKE™ Kits and help them build and understand each component using the model they build. |

At our third session with the students, we were able to complete the introduction to the Windmill and explain how it generates power using wind. After the slides, the students got in their team of six and completed their windmill models. Using these models, they were able to show us how wind can be used to create power. |
At our next session, we plan to introduce the students to the carousel model which shows an example of how energy is used. |

At our fourth session, we were able to introduce the students to the carousel model which shows an example of how Energy is used. After building the carousel model and watching the carousel video provided by FIRST, the students were able to understand how a carousel functions and how all the moving parts work together. |
Our goal for the next meeting is to give them a chance to start programming their models using the motors provided and build the Energy Storage Model. |
02/07/23 |
At our fifth session, we introduced the motors and programming methods included in the SPIKE™ kits. The students got the ability to use the motor which they attached to their carousel from the last meeting to test out various lines of SPIKE™ code. They created lines of code that allowed their carousel to spin, play music, and play their voice. |
For the next session, we hope to achieve the goal of learning about all the different sensors including the color sensor, motion sensor, and touch sensor that can be added to their Lego energy models. |
02/14/23 |
At our sixth session, we introduced the color sensor and programming methods for the lights and color sensor. The students got the ability to use the color sensor and lights which they used on their "spy robot" in order to change the light colors when the sensor detected a color. They were able to use the color sensor to detect a color then change the light to each of their groups favorite colors. |
For the next session, we hope to help the students use the color sensor to do even more things like move a motor or rotate their carousel. We also hope to finish teaching them all of the block programming basics. |
02/21/23 |
At our seventh session, the kids built the 'electric car' and they were able to code it to move around the track. Using this car, the students were able to connect the two motors and use their programs to make sure the motors moved at the same time so each of the wheels were in sync. They were also able to challenge themselves and replace the sleds in the front of the cars with their own wheels. |
For the next session, we hope to help the kids add a distance sensor to the car in order to make it stop when it senses something in front of it. We also hope to have the students create the rest of their energy placemat. |

At our eighth session, we helped the students work on creating their own energy journey within their teams in competition which is on May 13th. The students then prototyped their own designs for ways to generate, store, distribute, and consume energy. |
For the next session, we hope to help the students finish their energy journey prototype and start working on a board to show judges. |

At our ninth session, we worked with three students from the Fairfax HS Roarbotics team in order to guide the Providence Elementary students on how to improve their team energy models and make them more realistic and efficient. |
For our next session, we hope to work with the Providence ES students to create boards in order to display their understanding of this season's challenge which corresponds to energy. |

At our tenth session, we were able to work with students from the Fairfax HS Roarbotics team to help the Providence Elementary students work on their boards that they will display to their judges. We were able to give them ideas and tips on how to present and what to include in their presentation. |
For our next session, we hope to help the Providence ES students use their drafts to complete their boards and help them with their presentation to the judges. |

At our 11th session, we were able to work with students from the Fairfax HS Roarbotics team to help the Providence ES students complete their team boards. At this session we were also able to bring along one of our newest volunteers, Tylar Sparks. Tylar was able to get a handle on what the students were working on very fast and she was able to work with them to guide them through their team journey's. |
At our next and last session with the Providence ES After-School FLL team, we plan to introduce more of our volunteers and continue to collaborate with the Fairfax HS Roarbotics team and help the students prepare for judging and their competition. We also hope to continue to stay in touch with Providence Elementary School to start more teams next year. |

At our 12th and final session, we brought four of our newest volunteers. Ishaan, Sama, Rawan, and Kalea were able to guide the students with their presentation and give them feedback. The students were able to prepare for their competition which is on May 13th. |
Although this was the last session for the Providence FLL team, we hope to stay in touch with Providence ES to start more robotics teams with students from the Young Scholars Program. We hope to focus these robotics teams on the Lego EV3 Mindstorm kits so the students are able to gain the knowledge and the skills used in FLL. |
Providence ES (SPIKE™ Essential)
|
Due to the large number of students interested in joining the FIRST Lego League team at Providence ES, we wanted to spread our STEAM opportunities to even more students since the FIRST Lego League teams could only have 12 students. We worked with Mr. Borhauer to give students in the Young Scholars program a chance to build and program their own robots using their SPIKE™ Essential's kits. We meet with them every Tuesday.

04/11/23 |
During our first session with the students, we got the kits and the SPIKE™ application downloaded on each of the students' laptops and went over the basic sensors and motors involved. We then got everyone in pairs or groups of three so they could choose what we would build in the next session. |
For our next meeting, we plan to work with the students to help them build their first creation and program it if they have time. |
04/18/23 |
For our second session with the students, we utilized the SPIKE™ kits to create the ferris wheel and run it using the code that the kids created. We decided to assist the kids in building different components for every session so they could have fun while building new things. Today, we got the opportunity to introduce Janice, our newest volunteer. |
For our next session, we hope to take another vote to decide on what the students would like to build. We will then build that model and program it to run. |
4/25/23 |
For our third session with the Young Scholar students at Providence ES, we worked with them to create the helicopter model. Through this model they were able to program a motor and lights. Our Volunteer's were able to run this session since Ronit was competing in Florida. |
For our next session, we hope to build a new model based on what the students choose to build with their SPIKE kits. |

For our fourth session with the Young Scholar students at Providence ES, we helped them create the "Good Morning Machine" which is a Lego machine that consists of a light sensor and motor that show hand wave movements in order to wake you up. The students were able to program the machines to wave and display lights when it was a certain time. |
For our next session, we hope to take another class vote on what the students would like to build using their SPIKE kits. |

During our fifth session with the Young Scholar students at Providence ES, we took a class vote and the students chose to create the bowling alley. Using a motor, the students were able to create a system that rolls balls to knock over the small Lego bowling pins. |
For our next session, and final session for the school year, we hope to give the students a survey and a new Lego project. |

Today was our final session of the 2022-2023 school year with the Providence ES Young Scholar's students. During this session, we were able to help the students create a working pinball machine. We then ended the session by taking a team picture and giving them candy. |
We hope to continue working with Mr. Borhauer to start more robotics teams for the Young Scholar's students in the upcoming school year. |
Providence ES (EV3 Programming)

In order to give students in older grades (4-6th) an opportunity to be part of a STEM Robotics program, We worked with Mr. Borhauer to give students in the Young Scholar program a chance to program an EV3 Minstorms robot. We meet with them every Thursday and give the students new challenges.

During the first session with the 4-6th graders in the Young Scholars program at Providence, we were able to install the EV3 program on their laptops and go over some of the basic code needed in order to program their teams robot. |
For our next meeting, we plan to work with the students and give them a new challenge to make the robot do something cool. |

During the second session with Lego EV3 Mindstorms program at Providence ES, we were able to help them build a new hook attachment for their robotics which they used to complete their challenge of grabbing paper rings and bringing it back to their tables. |
For our next session, we hope to continue working with the hook attachment to see how many rings each table group can retrieve. |

During the third session with the Lego EV3 Mindstorms program at Providence ES, we continued helping the students finish their challenge of picking up the rings and gaining points as a team. |
For our next session, we will continue understanding the block programming using the color sensor and ultrasonic sensor. |

During this session with the Lego EV3 Young Scholar students at Providence ES, we helped them create their line tracking program so they could pick up rings while following a line. |
During our next session, we hope to refine the code and make the robots move more smoothly when picking up rings and following the line. |

During this session, we worked with the students in the Young Scholar's program at Providence ES to improve their code and help them overlap different tape colors to make the robots do different things when detecting different colors. |
During our next and last session, we hope to do a fun activity with the students and reward them with candy. |
Daniel's Run ES (FLL)

We started and mentored team 28507 Daniel's Run Lego League Team at Daniel's Run Elementary School. We meet with them every Wednesday in order to help them prepare for their competition on May 13th. Their club consists of two teams with six students each from the Young Scholars Program ranging from second through fourth grade.

We were able to help Ms. Auza, the club sponsor, understand how the FIRST® Lego® League program works and how it should be run. Using our prior knowledge and experience at Providence ES, we were able to guide her through the initial problems and help her understand how the club can be run successfully, and she agreed to be the teacher sponsor. |
For our next meeting, we plan to start our first official club meeting using the SPIKE™ Kits that we provided with the help of our sponsor Fair Lakes Youth Association. |

We held our team introduction session the following Thursday. Since there were a few students missing, we used this session as more of an introduction session so the students could get to know each other with the use of some icebreaker questions. We then explained the “Superpowered” theme and went over the basics of energy and how it's used in our daily lives. |
With the hopes that everyone is present in the next session, our goal for the next upcoming meeting is to evaluate the process in which energy gets to each person daily. |
02/01/23 |
At the first official session, the students used what they learned about energy from the last session to learn about the process by which energy goes through to get to their houses. They watched videos on storage departments, distribution facilities, and energy consumption centers. We introduced the students to the extra lego kits and they got a chance to become more familiar with it. |
The goal for the second meeting is to learn how to build a windmill and learn about how that windmills generate energy which can then be used by TVs, Phones, Lights, and more. |
03/01/23 |
Unfortunately, due to prior school activities, we were unable to have a session during last few weeks of February. However we are back and ready for our second session. We were able to teach the students how a windmill produces energy and go in depth of the other different sources to generate energy such as water or even sunlight. We also helped the students design and build their very own energy generating models using the Lego kits. |
For our next session, we hope to help the students create their own team windmill model and explain how the energy consumed be later consumed and used by the carousel which they will build in a future session. |

At the third session, we were able to work with the teams to create their very own windmill model and help them understand how energy is consumed. The teams were then able to prototype their own energy consumption models such as a video game console or TV. |
For our next session, we hope to help the students create their own energy battery (storage unit) which will demonstrate their energy storage model for their energy journey. |

At the fourth session, we worked with the teams to create their energy storage model to display how energy is stored before it is distributed and consumed. |

At our fifth session, we were able to work with the students to create their carousel model which is used to display consumption in their teams energy journey. During this session, we were also able to bring Cecile, Elisa, and Valencia, our organization's newest volunteers. They were able to connect with the students and help them create their models while staying on track. |
For our next session at Daniel's Run, we hope to use the SPIKE™ application that we downloaded during today's session to make the motors run and understand how to use block coding and make different components move. |

At our sixth session, we worked with previous volunteers as well as Isabella, our newest volunteer for FIRST For Youth. At this session, we were able to work with the students and teach them the block programming skills necessary to code the motors on the carousel and windmill. |
For our next session, we hope to work with our volunteers and help them build the electric car. We then hope to help them program the car to run automatically. |
04/12/23 |
At our seventh session with the Daniel's Run FLL team, we worked with the students in order to build their Lego cars using two motors. The students used these cars to display energy consumption. We were able to bring our newest volunteer, Josh, to this session in order to help us work with the students. |
At our next session with the students, we hope to help the kids learn how to use the distance sensor. Using the sensor, the kids will be able detect if something is in front of the car to make it stop. |

At our eighth session with the Daniel's Run FLL team, we helped the students continue what they worked on in the previous session. We then helped the build more of their models and gave them new ideas. |
