From a student project to a community mission
Founder Ronit Manchanda drew on his experience in DECA and robotics. What began as a project developed into a larger effort to bring age-appropriate robotics experiences to elementary students in the Fairfax High School pyramid.
Building the first school relationships
The students worked with Daniels Run Elementary School and Providence Elementary School, raised funds for LEGO SPIKE materials, and developed a twelve-week program focused on engineering fundamentals, design, and coding. High-school volunteers then helped lead weekly after-school activities.
Students teaching students
The model was intentionally student-led. High-school volunteers gained leadership and service experience while younger students received approachable guidance from mentors close enough in age to feel relatable.
Growing with community support
Mentors, school staff, families, sponsors, and Fair Lakes Youth Association helped the effort become more organized and sustainable. FIRST For Youth now operates as a strategic initiative of Fair Lakes Youth Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and is currently led by Ishaan Khatri.
The mission continues
The organization continues working to start and mentor teams, support programs and camps, connect volunteers with students, and make hands-on STEM experiences more accessible throughout the community.
