Current FIRST registration benchmarks
For the 2026–2027 season, FIRST lists FLL Explore registration at $150 and FLL Challenge registration at $285. The Challenge field set is an additional $105, and the required LEGO robotics set is not included. FIRST Tech Challenge registration is $350, with FIRST estimating about $1,500 for recommended robot materials. Local event fees are separate.
FRC requires a larger budget
FIRST Robotics Competition registration alone is in the several-thousand-dollar range, and a working budget may also include fabrication, tools, replacement parts, transportation, lodging, team operations, and additional events. Schools should review the current FIRST pricing page and speak with their regional program contact before committing.
Costs teams often overlook
- Local event registration
- Laptop or tablet access
- Tools, safety equipment, and storage
- Replacement and spare parts
- Practice-field materials
- Transportation, meals, and lodging
- Team shirts, printing, and outreach
- Sales tax and shipping
- A contingency for damaged or delayed components
Reduce cost without reducing quality
Reuse durable equipment across seasons, borrow appropriate school tools, begin with only required materials, seek donated meeting space, ask local businesses to sponsor specific needs, and apply for grants before purchasing. FIRST maintains a team-grant directory, and local program partners may know additional opportunities.
Build for year two
A team is sustainable when it can operate again next season. Track purchases, label reusable assets, keep sponsor relationships active, and finish the year with a written budget showing what must be replaced and what can be reused.
