FIRST Robotics Competition is designed for high-school teams prepared for industrial-sized robots, a fast build cycle, extensive fundraising, specialized mentors, transportation, tools, and a larger operating budget. It can involve business, media, fabrication, software, strategy, and outreach subteams.

- What are the students’ ages and current experience?
- How many reliable adult mentors are available?
- What meeting, build, and storage space can the school provide?
- How much can the team realistically raise and sustain each year?
- How far will the team need to travel for events?
- How much weekly time can students commit during the season?
Start at the level that can thrive
A smaller program with dependable meetings and strong mentorship is better than an ambitious program that cannot be sustained. Teams can grow into more advanced programs as students, knowledge, equipment, and community support increase.
